BLU News! Oct & Nov 2019

BLU & BLSG AGM

This year’s AGM will take place on Sunday 3rd November 2019 in the Whippersnappers’ Room from 10.00-12.30. Free coffee and croissants will be available from 09.30am. Relevant documents (financial reports, Chairs’ reports) will follow prior to the AGM.  Please try and show your presence as we need to hear your voices, comments and contributions.  Fusion managers and Lambeth officials will be ready to take your questions and hopefully answer a few.  We’ll be putting up our usual compliments & complaints forms on dry and wet side boards, everything will be collated before the AGM.

As with previous years, anyone who would like to be part of the BLU Committee is encouraged to put themselves forward for election.  To be eligible an individual needs to have been a BLU member for at least 6 months.  A number of existing committee members will not be standing for re-election this year and we are keen to get new people involved.  Committee members must be passionate about all things Lido and preferably regular users who have a good sense of how the place work, in order to continue BLU’s longstanding relationship with Fusion.

The Purpose of BLU

1. To work to safeguard the Lido’s future as an open-air pool, gym and community based centre for enjoyment of creative, health and child-focused activities
2. To ensure user involvement and consultation in decisions on the future of the Lido
3. To provide user representation in future management structures for the Lido
4. To maintain, promote, support and enhance the user experience

Nominations for the BLU Committee and Officer roles need to be received on or before the 27th October 2019. Nominations must be made by two members eligible to vote – these are BLU members who have held continuous membership for at least 6 months prior to nomination. Emails should be sent to secretary@brockwelllido.com. Should nominations exceed vacancies, election shall be made by a show of hands, unless the meeting agrees to a ballot.

POOL REFURBISHMENT UPDATE, CONSULTATION DATES & TIMES

Consultation dates with Fusion management are:  Oct 3rd , 1pm, Studio 2 and 6.30 pm in the Lido Cafe.  Oct 8th at 2pm, Studio 2 and 6.30pm Whippersnappers’ Room.

Many users will be aware that the condition of the concrete lining of the pool is in a poor state of repair and that work is long overdue since the pool was patched and painted in 2010.  Fusion has been considering three options for the repair of the pool – 1: Alphatic Pure Polyurea Lining; 2: Glass Reinforced Plastic Lining; 3: Expoxy Repair Morter (patch and paint).  There are pros and cons attached to all three, and these were outlined by Mark Munday from Fusion in two public presentations and Q&As in May.

Fusion’s original plan was to begin work on their preferred option in October.  However, they have decided to go back out to tender, and while they are keen that works start as soon as possible, they are now unlikely to begin in October.  Depending on the option chosen, the pool will need to close for between 6 and 10 weeks.  Anyone with a 2019/20 winter swim pass will be provided with a pro-rata refund.  In addition, BLU has asked Fusion to explore what alternative facilities swimmers could use during closure.

STREAMLINE SWIMS SUMMER RACES

Yet again a great turn out for Streamline’s annual summer races. Spirits were high, muscles were flexed, caps were pulled on and cossies adjusted! It was good to see so many young and more mature swimmers joining in the races, despite the cooler weather.  They shivered and swam and shivered some more, ate cake (thanks to the providers), sampled delights from the BBQ (thanks BBQ makers), won prizes and contributed to a day to remember.

Thanks to Mike and Sarah for their fabulous organisation and to Amelia on sound. There were many supporters and helpers, and we thank them for their time, prizes and for just being there. Special thanks to Cat Rowlands for being a superb MC. Someone actually heard that Clare Balding was the MC. We can confirm it wasn’t Clare but Cat. The event raised £350.40 for WaterAid through a raffle and the BBQ.

The annual Parliament Hill v Brockwell Lido was narrowly won by Parliament Hill, and we congratulate them. The Richard Turner 1 Mile Cup was won by Fiona Kinsella (the first year by a woman). The inaugural CJ Faucher cup was won by Jason Mabelis for the egg and spoon race.
